The reality of dumpster diving is - sometimes you hit it big and sometimes you walk away with nothing! Luckily we DID rescue a lot of books from a retail store's trash and got to take Pilgrim to the park :) What do you think about the drug store throwing away all those books? I wish they would have donated them or at the VERY least recycled them!

When you said, "wanna go to the dog park?" My dog Bella got excited and ran to the door lol .
Gives a whole new meaning to don’t judge a book by its cover.
That's insane, cutting down trees to create paper to turn into books then throw the books in the garbage. The front page is not the important part of the book, it's the last page. That page tells you what the story is about. Thank you for saving those books and everything else you saved from the landfill.
The vendors require that the covers be ripped off when books are discarded, so they can’t be resold. I used to work in a book store.
However, crafters and scrapbookers love books, even if they’re damaged. That sheet music you tossed aside is worth money to junk journal makers.
The "sheet music" looked like music I often just download from the internet and print off for my use. Still..........I wondered about saving it, too.
Books should never be discarded in the first place though...
even readers don't mind books without covers :)

Senior Centers, Nursing Homes they like gently used books and DVD's too.

Anita West Also donate to USO Centers or send to soldiers overseas. I would send books to my brothers and they would get passed around the squadron.
Those manequin heads are probably real hair for cosmetology students. Those things are super expensive. You can probably sell them.

cosmetology heads are pretty sought after by halloween decorators and mask collectors, for displaying masks
She left one of the skins behind though that model is one of those with two hair lengths and she left behind the long hair one she only took the short hair.... Those skins are removable they have clips on the sides to clip onto the plastic head....

They return the front cover to their book/magazine supplier for credit on books not sold.
One of the first page always says dont purchase if the cover is missing. It is considered stolen.
That's interesting. I think it would be fun to read some of these and then design my own cover for them.

I loved the way Pilgrim got so excited when you asked him if he wanted to go to the dog park. He is so sweet.
I was diving a year ago and looked in a dumpster I've never been too and apparently it was a wig shop and they display their wigs on mannequin heads. Well, this particular night, there was only one in there and they had tied the head to the top on the dumpster so when someone opened the side it was staring at you. Well, that person was me. I think my soul left my body that night!
I found two full grown men in a dumpster a few weeks go. They had the dumpster doors closed.. now that is creepy.. thank goodness I didn't go alone that day. My ride was waiting for me and even got out when I was talking to someone he couldn't see.

Brittany I was laughing hysterically by the end of your comment & imagining myself having the very same reaction. It's after 4am & my neighbor probably heard me it was so loud but it's ok because he works graveyard so didn't wake him up.
Cool that you helped that dog! Breaks my heart that his humans didn't keep a better watch over him! He was a handsome fellow!

Poor thing was really showing his teeth and snarling. Not safe for him to be out. People are stupid.
The Dog looked lost, and him barking was his defense to a stranger. Good thing to call animal control, but I would have stayed to make sure he wouldn't run into the street. Please don't take this wrong. I'm very much a dog lover! I had one for 14yrs, and she passed on.
I agree about not petting aggressive dogs because I was bit once but this pooch looked to me that he may have been trying to get help for his owner inside that may have been injured. He kept running back toward the building like he wanted someone to follow him. I would have called the police to do a safety check of the owner. The dog looked frustrated that he couldn't get attention for the help he needed.
When I was in cosmetology school I use to hide those all around the house for my roommates to find. Open the fridge and find a head. Great times 😂

I think you did great getting in and out of that dumpster, Kelly! Me and my sister went dumpster diving for the first time on Sunday, and we had a terrific time together! I am almost 59 and she is over 60, but she climbed right on into the dumpster at HF(with me making sure she didn't fall or anything) and we got some really nice tools, hardware, paintbrushes and stuff. So, if anyone is afraid to try it just because you're a little bit older, just go try it!

I loooove how much you love your puppy dog and the strays. I’m that way w my cat and the strays I see on my running routes. I have made quite a few friends out of the felines that have been altered and released back into the community. Lol!!

I love this! She inspired me to check the Petco dumpster but I chickened out after the recycle bin, since it was in a fenced but not locked "thing"

They rip the covers off so they can get credit when they write them off. I worked in a store that did that.
I worked at a Walgreens & the company that did the books & magazines always tore the covers off. They could donate to a senior living facility.
I knew it was Walgreeens. Worst pharmacy and overpriced shitty drug store ever.
Pilgrim had a couple friends to play with at the end so I’m sure he had fun😁
You can hang the teapot in a tree for birds to make nests.

I was going to recommend that too. I have tea pots, cups and saucers hanging in trees for the birds. Looks so pretty. Some have seed in them.

Publishers require the covers to be returned to receive credit for unsold mass market paperbacks. That is why they are torn off.

Ripping the covers off is the national procedure of ALL stores that sell books - they mail in the cover of the book to the manufacturer and then they get credit for it.
Yep, when I worked for a drug store that's what we did except out books never stayed in the dumpster lol. I have so many paperback books.

My uncle owned a store and I remember him having to do this 50 years ago. Lots of reading for free!!!

Watching these videos are going to get me in trouble. Over the past few months I picked up x-mas wrapping paper, winged back chair (like new) and a good quality toilet plunger (that I did sanitize). All out on the curb. Talk about getting inspired LOL.

That thermometer is expensive, at least in England, my mum brought that one off of Amazon for £60
i think the books can be sold in as is condition, just state that its missing the cover in the listing. you can always find a photo with the actual book with the cover on line. use that photo in the listing. but be sure to state it is missing the cover on yours. charge less. done.😁
I went to college (undergrad) in Denton in the 1970's. I haven't been back in years but I very much enjoy your "explorations" and am always trying to figure out in my mind, where in the city of Denton you might be "diving". Very entertaining and hoping you're being very careful and safe! Keep the videos coming!

Hi Kelli, I share your appreciation of books and frustration that the Drug Stores destroy and dump them on a somewhat regular basis. It does take time to find them homes. Some nice finds. I do like your new camera position in your car. Idea for the books= A crafter can turn them into secret stash boxes, shelves or other things.
So glad to see you doing more than just dumpster diving. Excited to see you out having fun with the pup.

Fun to see you taking Pilgrim to the dog park... we take our dog Harley to the dog park once in a while. He loves it, well that and to Starbucks for a pupacino.
The retailers rip the covers off (strip) the paperback books that don't sell, because they send them back to the publisher for credit. They're supposed to destroy the book itself. But a lot of times employees take them.

I get so excited when you upload a new video! I've started.going and the other night I got ten boxed frozen pizzas,.three bags of scampi and fish fingers! All.still frozen solid. The previous time I got bags of salad, and potatoes all in sealed packets and 100% fresh. I just cannot believe what gets thrown away. We have food shares here in the UK and people are willing to go and retrieve the food before it goes into the waste. This one store is only fresh food. But it's perfect food
joanne moon usually, stuff like that is something a shopper took to pay for, then decided they didn’t want it. Usually it gets thrown. Especially frozen and chilled foods.

a word of advice lock your car if you are in the dumpster or more than 15 feet away. Also keep your doors closed if you arenthauling stuff to your car. I used to dumpster dive. I really enjoy watching you!!

I love your videos, but there is something I must say. I noticed when you were taking Pilgrim to the dog park that Pilgrim was loose on the back seat. This is really dangerous. I'm a nurse & I have seen car accidents where people have been killed by their dogs because they are loose in the car. I don't know how much Pilgrim weighs but if you can imagine him being thrown at you at about 30 or 40 miles an hour you will understand what I mean. Most pet stores carry dog seat belts & they really are a must, it could save Pilgrim's life & your own. Take care, Linda x 🐕🦺😀💜
I always watch your videos and I’m impressed with what Americans throw away. Baby clothes with label, furniture, computer, school supplies and food within validity. This infant thermometer is expensive and new books. As I live in a developing country, these things are unlikely to go to waste, we ask if any neighbors want them, we put them in a group of donations or send them to places that accept donations. Thankfully, there are people like you who give the right destination for these things.

Kelly, you did the right thing by keeping your distance from the pup. If you had gone closer, he or she may have panicked and bolted across the busy street. It's always a coin toss when a person sees a lone dog. Be safe! Enjoy the dumpster diving.

I appreciate you showing the realistic side of dumpster diving; i.e. rather than just showing the gold mines, you show that, yeah, a lot of dumpsters you visit won't have anything good in them.

I'm glad you rescued the books. You don't need the covers to read the story.!!!! Donating to a ladies shelter, senior citizen home...maybe even the free food cabinet....homeless read too!!! And yes Kelly, in the very least the store could have placed the books in the recycle bin, not the garbage bin!
My Dad had a store and the company used to tear the cover off of the books rather than take them back. Magazines too. Love your attitude and your videos! Hi Pilgrim!!!

If nothing else, you can shred those books and use as filler in the packages that you ship your items. On another video, you asked how to get security tag off of clothes. You need a heavy duty magnet to get the job done. Good luck. Love watching you.🤗

My boyfriend's mother used to work in a Kress (like a Woolworths). They would send the covers of unsold paperbacks back to the publisher/distributor for credit and she took the books home.
Hi, Once again a lovely vlog. The head is what trainee hairdressers use to practice on when learning how to cut and style hair it is human hair, It has been cut usually its longer. All those books what a shame the front cover has been ripped off. At least they can be donated. Keep your vlogs coming please xx
